Avoid poll card nightmare

THOSE wanting to vote in the election are being urged to register.
Runnymede's acting returning officer Paul Turrell has warned if the date for the general election combines with the local elections there may be a poll card nightmare for residents to return postal applications by May 6.
He said: "The general election this year has yet to be called and this could create an issue relating to the Parliamentary poll cards.
"These are sent to all residents eligible to vote and not only give the deadlines for registering on the electoral register but their choice of how to vote.
"We currently have 6,000 residents registered to vote by post in Runnymede with an additional 1,800 adopted from Elmbridge as part of the Parliamentary constituency."
Poll cards inform electors for the deadlines for registering to vote and absent voting but Mr Turrell is concerned the document will not be received in time.
He added: "I am concerned, because of the late notification of when the election will actually be held and legislative restrictions as to when the poll cards can actually be sent out, that the poll cards will be produced in a very short timescale.
"Consequently, I urge those residents who are not on the Register of Electors to register promptly."
