CHILDREN pledged their support to saving the rainforests during a day of jungle fun.

Year 4 pupils at Hatch Ride Primary School in Crowthorne took part in a range of tropically themed activities to mark the end of a project about rainforests and the importance of conservation.

Their teacher, Nicola Why, who organised the day, said: "It was really to support the work we have been doing this term on where we find rainforests, who lives in them and what is happening to them currently with them being destroyed.

"The children have been very interested in learning about them. They were really quite amazed at some of the facts about them that they have found out."

She added: "It has given them that sense of responsibility and citizenship, realising that they are part of the world and that there is more than just what is on their doorstep."

The project included a visit to the Smallmead recycling centre in Reading as part of learning about caring for the environment. The class of 29 children then had an activity day at the school in Hatch Ride on Tuesday, July 13, which included face-painting, word games and making tropical sweets using food originally found in rainforests.

They also used computers to create designs encouraging people to save the rainforests, which were printed out on to T-shirts for them to take home.

Mrs Why said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed it and the parents were amazed at what they'd made."
