Emmerdale star opens store
STARSTRUCK shoppers bagged more than a bargain at the opening of Bracknell's new cut-price store on Saturday when they rubbed shoulders with one of Emmerdale's finest.
Customers cheered and applauded as Tim Lister, who plays Carl King, cut the ribbon and officially opened Poundland, before posing for photographs, signing autographs and giving out £1 vouchers for shoppers to exchange the discounted goodies.
Speaking from a queue of excited soap fans winding its way around the store, Linda Packham from Priestwood, who took along her daughters, Hayley, 17, Zoe, 13 and nine-year-old Jade, said: "We're all big fans of Emmerdale so we're looking forward to meeting 'Carl'. We're very excited!"
She added: "The shop looks great too and when you've got three daughters who all need shampoo and makeup, stores like this are fantastic."
Alison Watson, who lives in Wooden Hill, went shopping with her daughter, Aimee, 12, and stumbled across the new store. She said: "I can't believe it's all just £1 - I want to keep checking!"
Loud music filled the store as the DJ got into full swing and Poundland's 30 new staff served the first of their customers and kept the shelves stocked up.
Faisal Altaf,[corr] store manager, said: "I think the attraction to the store is that we represent good value products and we are expanding and creating opportunities for employment too."
The store opened on Thursday last week and Neil Jones, Poundland 's business manager for the county, said: "We have surpassed our expectations for the past two days and we are equally pleased with today.
"I think there is a number of reasons why Poundland is doing so well and one of those is because of the way economy is and also because our customers are more knowledgeable about prices and value for money now."
