A POLICE officer has warned residents to be vigilant following an increase in metal thefts.

Inspector Jon Goosey reported an increase in the number of thefts in the last year, with seven instances reported in Bracknell within just two weeks - and he believes there are more unreported incidents.

Thieves have been known to steal alloy wheels from cars, metal items from garages, piping and even washing machines to sell the metal on for cash.

Insp Goosey said: "There is a real issue with metal thefts, it is not getting any better.

"In the last year it has definitely become more and more of an issue.

"Because of it, people have lost their phone lines and older people lose their care lines or the broadband can go.

"The number of thefts has increased nationally and locally. We have it as a priority for Bracknell."

Thames Valley Police is running Operation Precious to tackle the problem. The initiative works with licensed scrap metal dealers to raise awareness of the problem and to prevent them from unintentionally accepting stolen items.

Insp Goosey said: "The operation reduces opportunities for thieves to sell on or dispose of metal items.

"We focus on trying to find the offenders but if you have nowhere to sell the metal, you won't steal it in the first place."

Residents are being encouraged to mark metal items - including lead roofs - with a UV pen.

Insp Goosey added: "Residents just need to be aware, particularly if they are advertising metal items. They should also report suspicious activity or people who are coming round asking if there is anyone selling scrap items."
