A CHURCH minister has been nominated for a Pride of Bracknell award for being “kind and welcoming”.

Chris Porter, senior minister at Easthampstead Baptist Church (EBC), was nominated by Yvette Briggs, who attended the Holiday At Home for older people that the church ran this summer, plus other events.

She said: “It is for kindness and welcoming service to all, regardless of whether I belong to his church or not. There are such a lot of lovely people there.”

Reverend Porter, 40, grew up in Wiltshire then went to university in Kingston-upon-Thames, where he settled with wife Ruth and worked as a management consultant before becoming a minister.

Rev Porter, who has two daughters, Emily, 10 and Jessica, eight, said: “I just had a sense that there were things that we could do better in our churches and I was really passionate about seeing the church get more involved and connected with its local community and doing more to help those who don’t know God or go to church to encounter him.”

Rev Porter has been at EBC in South Hill Road for 12 years, initially as an assistant minister then for the last two-and-a-half years as senior minister.

During that time, he has been keen for the church to get more involved in the community, by holding fun days, running a meal service for people coming of hospital and organising other events and activities.

He said: “We think that it’s really important to be demonstrating God’s love as well as talking about it.”
