MAYBE I should have made more of an effort to look stylish on the afternoon I interviewed Nicky Hambleton-Jones of 10 Years Younger fame.
Lucky for me, my perhaps slightly uncoordinated work outfit was safe from scrutiny from the straight-talking fashionista as we spoke on the telephone.
Nicky shot to fame on TV show 10 Years Younger, the programme that offered unstylish women new clothes as well as surgery in a bid to look, well, 10 years younger.
After presenting the popular show for five years, Nicky is now working on her own glasses range and has launched website www.lookandfeelyounger.tv what she describes as a “one stop shop for anyone that needs anti-aging advice.”
Now, she is bringing her stylish expertise to the people of Bracknell during the town’s very own fashion week from September 16 to 19.
Bracknell’s shoppers will be able to gain style tips from Nicky herself at Princess Square shopping centre during Love Bracknell Love Fashion. This will include catwalk shows, mini makeovers, manicures plus loads of special offers.
The 39-year-old says: “I think it sounds fantastic, it sounds like it will be lots of fun. Everyone loves fashion. I just love working with the public.”
But is she ever able to switch off from analysing what people look like?
“I can completely switch off from it. But if someone was glaringly dreadful, you cannot help yourself!
“Generally what I see people wearing is clothes that are too baggy and shapeless. Or there is too much flesh on show, or too much satin.
“Sometimes, it is too shiny and that can make you look like a Christmas decoration, sometimes you have to pull back a bit.”
Well I certainly don’t want to look like something that should be on a Christmas tree, so in order to get a head start in the fashion stakes, I quizzed her on the trends for Autumn/Winter 2010.
“Military is back, so there is nothing new. Brass buttons, big strong shoulders, the very heavy fabric, Grey khakis, blacks, so that is one of the themes,” she says.
“Another is embellishment, lots of velvets, lace, gemstones. It’s very luxurious with lots of decoration - beads, lace feathers.
“Also, there is country chic - tartan, very tweedy, sheepskin jackets, aviators, pattern knitted dresses. It is very much the refined English gentry look with understated elegance.”
And I’m informed that camel is the new black this season, but Nicky admits that it is not one of her favourite trends.
“I cannot stand camel! It makes me feel ill!” She laughs.
In the 21st century, many people look to those in the limelight for guidance on what to wear as well as what to avoid.
Nicky highlights Danni Minogue as a celeb who has been getting it right in the fashion stakes. She said: “I think she looked fantastic when she did X Factor last year and she dresses for her age. I really admire her for reinventing her look.”
But everyone has an off-day once in a while right? When all you want to do is lounge around in your tracksuit bottoms? Wrong.
“I do not own a baggy shirt or tracksuit. For relaxing I normally wear jeans with fitted tshirts. Wearing baggy clothes or a tracksuit doesn’t make me feel any better!” She says.
Maybe it’s time for me to reassess my wardrobe.
