A FREE guide has been produced on what to do if disaster strikes.

Experts from the Thames Valley Local Resilience Forum have put together advice on how to prepare for and cope with emergencies including heavy snow, building evacuation, flooding, a flu pandemic or loss of water supply.

Louise Osborn, Bracknell Forest Council’s emergency planning manager, said: “The 'Are You Ready’ guide is an essential read for residents so they can be prepared just in case the worst does happen.

“Some of the advice may sound simplistic, but it’s these easy steps that can make the difference between being ready in an emergency situation or being caught out.”

Tips include creating a household emergency plan, checking smoke alarms weekly and saving an emergency contact called “Ice” - In Case of Emergency - in mobile phones.

Advice on dealing with snow includes carrying a spade in the car boot and, if a driver becomes stuck in the snow, staying with the car and tying something brightly-coloured to the aerial.

Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, corporate services and public protection at Bracknell Forest Council, said: “The severe weather last year highlighted just how unprepared some people were for an emergency.

“This booklet is about the council and other public sector organisations coming together to help people help themselves.”

The 'Are You Ready’ booklet can be picked up at libraries, leisure centres, council reception areas or at www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/environment/env-emergency-planning. Alternatively, email emergency.planning@bracknell-forest.gov.uk or call customer services on 01344 352000.
