PET lovers are urged to ensure that their dog does not have a “ruff” time while they are on holiday.

Bracknell Forest Council’s licensing team is urging all people planning to send their dog to a home boarding service to make sure that it is licensed by the council.

Robert Sexton, head of trading standards and licensing at the council, said: “Most dog owners are unaware that if they book their pet into a home boarding establishment that the business must be licensed by the council.

“If you are considering booking your animal in with a home boarder while you go on holiday, please do ask to see their licence before making the booking.

“You may contact the licensing team on 01344 352000 if you require further information.”

Anyone who runs a business boarding dogs in their own home, rather than the owner’s home, must hold a current Home Boarding Establishment Licence, which potential clients can ask to see at any time. The licence is to ensure that boarders have relevant experience or qualifications, that they are registered with a 24-hour vet, that they have insurance and enough room for the dogs, and that the facilities are hygienic and safe.

It also means that council licensing staff can visit the premises to ensure that they are suitable.

Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, corporate services and public protection, said: “Our pets are an important part of the family and so making some basic checks on where our pet stays while we’re away could ensure it has a happy and healthy time.”

A licence is not needed if it is a friend or relative looking after the animal, or the person looking after the animal is doing so in its owner’s home.

It only applies to companies using their own home. There are separate rules for kennels.
