A GROUP that supports young carers is appealing for donations to help it keep providing its service.
Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action’s Young Carers Project supports children and young people throughout the borough who care for a parent, sibling or family member who is ill, disabled or who suffers from mental health problems or drug or alcohol addiction.
Project co-ordinator Angela Evans said: “The project is finding it more difficult to raise the funds needed to run such a valuable service for these young people, and due to funding cuts for the coming year we are hoping that by raising awareness of this project that other local companies may be able to support us too.”
The project runs weekly youth clubs, day trips and holidays as well as providing family and one-to-one support when needed. It also works with schools and other agencies to provide the best possible care and life chances for the young people.
Since the project started in 2005, it has supported more than 150 youngsters aged five to 18. Mrs Evans said: “We have been lucky enough to have been supported by local companies over this time and are very grateful for their support, GE Energy, JDA International Ltd, JJM Taxis, the Bracknell News, Easthampstead Rotary Club to name but a few. The support these companies have given us range from Easter eggs, Christmas presents, donations and holidays for the young carers.”
She added: “We hope to expand the project so that we can reach more young carers in our area and give them the support they need. This cannot happen without more funds and we are appealing to those who may be able to support such a worthwhile project.”
A team from the project will also be doing a fundraising skydive on October 31. To sponsor them or to support the project, call 01344 304404.
