THERE was no getting bored during the summer holidays for youngsters who took part in an action-packed army cadet camp.

Wokingham cadet Hayden Brookes, 12, who goes to Yately School, and Garth Hill College students Paul, 14 and Peter, 12, along with their mum Kim Green, an Army Cadet Force (ACF) instructor, were among 200 army cadets from Berkshire who took part in this year’s annual two week camp.

Peter said: “My brother has been in for two years so I joined, as I thought it would be good.”

His mum, who works in the finance office at Garth Hill College and joined the ACF last year, said: “I joined because as a family we are really close and when my eldest son joined I could see that I could do my bit as well, and help out, and I just love it and then I persuaded Peter to join as well.

“I have learnt so many new things that I would never have dreamed of before being an instructor in the ACF.”

Activities at the camp at Folkestone Army Training Camp in Sussex this month included training in field craft training, using the cadet rifle, target shooting, sailing, kayaking and working towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards and BTEC qualifications.

Hayden Brookes, who has been a cadet for seven months, did activities including scaling a climbing wall and said: “This is my first time on the wall and it was quite hard, but really good.”

Berkshire Army Cadet Commandant Colonel Peter Webb, who planned the camp, said: “I always tell my youngsters that being an army cadet means you have something else to offer, and cadets here this week will not only be having fun, but many will be working towards qualifications that will stand them in good stead when they start to venture into the job market.”
