A NEWLY-formed gardening group will hold its first AGM next month to discuss plans including introducing a Bracknell plant show.

Bracknell Horticultural Association (BHA) will decide its constitution and the possibility of setting up initiatives including a tool hire scheme at its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, September 1.

The group was created when two-year-old South Road Allotment Association (SRAA) and Bracknell Forest Gardening Club (BFGC), established for around 30 years, both decided they wanted to expand their activities.

Iain Rillie, chairman of Bracknell Horticultural Association, said: “We really want to create a vibrant sense of community where we embrace the traditional and the modern.

“Gardening has never been so popular, what with the explosion in the grow-your-own movement, organics, and an appreciation of the role horticulture and biodiversity can play in environmental and ecology issues.

“By catering for the varied interests of gardeners in Bracknell we hope to forge a distinct identity.”

BHA will run a monthly events programme between October and April, plus social events during the summer.

Andy Maxwell, membership secretary of BHA and previously secretary of SRAA, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for all of Bracknell’s gardeners. The allotment association was focused primarily on one site in the town and the gardening club was based on the other side of Bracknell. By coming together as a broad organisation, open to all, we can offer a great package for gardeners.

“We will be running our successful seed discount scheme, seasonal talks on all manner of gardening topics, quizzes, a Gardener’s Question Time-style event, and much more.

“This is all about creating a welcoming and sociable community for gardeners where we can share our knowledge and experiences for the benefit of everyone. The towns and villages surrounding Bracknell have gardening clubs and shows - it’s about time Bracknell got in on the act.”
