A TASTE of the Far East was on offer during the first day of a church's "Holiday at home" week for older people.

Helpers and guests at Easthampstead Baptist Church saw a selection of Samurai armour and swords as part of the entertainment on Monday.

The week has been based around the theme of a cruise, with food and activities from a different destination each day - plus a traditional seaside break at Eastbourne yesterday (Wednesday).

Simon Lace, older persons' worker at the church in South Hill Road, Easthampstead, said: "It's the first time we've done a 'Holiday at home' week and we've been speaking to other churches that have done them before.

"We've got quite a lot of elderly people who come to the church or clubs associated with it. We thought, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could do something during the summer holidays for people who might not be going away?'."

He added: "It's been going really well."

The church carried out a survey in the spring to see what activities would be popular. As a result, during the week it has been offering crafts, sing-a-longs, lunches and other entertainment for around 50 people each day.

See www.ebc-bracknell.org or call the church on 01344 487744.
