STOLEN number plates were attached to another car to allow its occupant to steal petrol without being traced.

The number plates were taken from a silver Fiat Punto parked in Crossfell, Wildridings some time after 4pm on Tuesday, July 20.

The plates, AJ06 KLP, were then seen on a silver Peugeot at 8.50pm that day as it left the forecourt of a petrol station along the A33 near Basingstoke without anyone paying.

PC Alec Phillips, the investigating officer, said: "The number plates are likely to have been stolen off the Punto whilst it was still light outside. The car was parked at the far side of a car park at the end of Crossfell, which is at the end of a block of flats. It is therefore likely that someone may have either witnessed the offence or seen someone acting suspiciously in the area."

Anyone with information can contact PC Phillips on 08458 505 505 or the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555111.
