CHILDREN had a très bon time celebrating all things French for Bastille Day.

Youngsters at Stepping Stones Day Nursery in Finchampstead, made French brioche sweet bread, with icing in the red, white and blue of the Tricolore flag.

Madame Catherine Puyravaud-Beahan, who comes in once a week to teach French to the two to five-year-olds, also helped them sing French songs and act out the story of the storming of the Bastille prison as part of the activities on Wednesday last week.

Kirsty Cordery, manager of the nursery on Nine Mile Ride, said: "It was a fantastic day. The children just can't wait for every Wednesday when Madame Puyravaud-Beahan comes in. They've picked up French very quickly."

The nursery caters for 34 children from babies to five years.

Children at Warfield Primary School in All Saints Rise also got into the Gallic spirit, with a range of activities organised by Year One teacher and modern foreign languages co-ordinator Ruth Vassor.

Highlights included playing boules, having a French lunch, learning some French phrases and creating artwork in the style of famous French artists.

Year Two teacher Wendy Keep said: "The children really threw themselves into it."
