CHILDREN learnt about staying safe and being responsible members of the community at a Junior Citizen event.

Around 400 Year 6 pupils from schools across the north of Bracknell borough attended the two-day event at the Wick Hill Centre in Garth last week.

School Community Watch co-ordinator Margaret Weber, who organised the event with Mary Khawaja of Bracknell Forest Council's extended services department, said: "All the schools taking part belong to the School Community Watch scheme, which encourages children to take pride in their neighbourhood and make their views heard."

The children discussed issues including bullying, anti-social behaviour, health and fire safety during the events on Tuesday and Wednesday, last week.

In addition, the pupils, from Ascot Heath, Binfield, Cranbourne, Holly Spring, Kennel Lane, Sandy Lane, Warfield, Whitegrove and Winkfield primary schools, were able to meet older students from Ranelagh School and Garth Hill College who will be their peer mentors when they start at the schools in September. The secondary school pupils also performed an anti-bullying play.

The primary school pupils were split into small groups to go round 10 different stations, where they heard 10-minute presentations on various topics.

People who were invited to speak at the event, on subjects from internet safety to counterfeit goods and food hygiene, included Safer Schools Partnership officers PC Indy Pandhal and PC Miriam Virgo, police community support officers (PCSOs), neighbourhood inspectors and representatives from partner agencies including the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Bracknell Forest Council.

Ms Weber thanked everyone who supported the event, including First Buses.
