THE funeral of a well-known and loved teacher is due to be held on Wednesday.

David Karsten, who died on Wednesday last week aged 74 after a long period of ill health, was head of classics and careers at Ranelagh School in Bracknell during his time there from 1966-1997.

He leaves two daughters and his wife of nearly 41 years, Sue, who said: "He was a very special person. He just loved the interaction with pupils and from all I hear, the pupils really loved being taught by him as well."

Mr Karsten spent his early years with parents Audrey and Ernest Karsten in Halls Road, Tilehurst, Reading.

He studied at Reading School, then read classics at Reading University before doing two years' national service in the Royal Signals then the Intelligence Corps. He then taught classics at Lord William's Grammar School in Thame and did a postgraduate certificate in education at Oxford University before starting at Ranelagh, where he also coached the under-15s' cricket team and ran a photographic club.

Mr and Mrs Karsten, of Campbell Road, Woodley, were also founder members of what became St James' Church in Kingfisher Drive, Woodley, when it was planted from St John's Church in 1969.

Mr Karsten's funeral will be at 2pm at St James' Church. Instead of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Fosters' Amenities Fund or the St James' Church Centre via A B Walker in Eldon Road, Reading.
