Gardening group hopes to sprout new members
GARDENING fans do not have to be naturally green- fingered to start setting down roots ready for the spring season.
There may still be frost on the ground but Sunningdale and District Gardening Association (SADGA) is inviting people to find out about choosing and growing their own vegetables this year as the group kicks off its 2012 programme.
The talk will be given by broadcaster and writer John Negus and the association hopes to attract more members to its monthly meetings at the year rolls on.
Chris Parnell, acting secretary for SADGA, said: "Now is the time that people start thinking about what they want to grow this year. But it doesn't matter if members don't have an interest in growing things in their own garden, we talk about everything from window boxes to topiary."
The association was formed in 1936 by the professional gardeners who worked on the grounds of the large houses around the Sunningdale area, as a place to share ideas.
The association later started to invite amateur gardeners to meetings. The larger estates also started to be broken up into smaller properties.
Mrs Parnell added: "As the land changed so the association changed.
"Now it is as much a social club as a gardening club; people don't have to have green fingers and shouldn't worry about not knowing Latin names, it's really open to anyone interested in plants."
John Negus will give his talk on Thursday, February 2, at the Village Hall in Church Road, Sunningdale, at 7.30pm. Visit www.sadga.org.uk
