Dorothy and Victor Merry have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Birchlands Care Home in Englefield Green.

Mrs Merry, 91 and Mr Merry, 95 both live Birchlands and were joined by family members as they celebrated their special occasion.

Care staff had decorated the lounge with balloons and banners and had also made a special anniversary cake. A card from the Queen and lots of surprise visitors added to the occasion.

Home manager Sunita Aucharaz said: "It was a special day for Dorothy and Victor who enjoyed every moments and were pleased to share it with all the resident and staff at Birchlands.

"The couple had eagerly awaited for today and Dorothy loved talking about how she was only 21 when they got married."

The couple met while walking on Runnymede during the war. He was in the navy, serving on destroyers - so it was a long and worrying courtship before they were finally able to marry.

They have four children, nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
