THE PRINCIPLE of Royal Holloway, University of London, has been made Deputy Lieutenant of the county.

Professor Paul Layzell, principal of the university in Egham, has been made the Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, after an appointment by the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux.

The Lord-Lieutenant is the personal representative of the Queen in the county, and is responsible for managing Royal visits to the county, in addition to participating in civic and voluntary ceremonies and working with the local units of the armed forces and their cadets. Prof Layzell will be joining a group of Deputy Lieutenants from across Surrey, who assist the Lord-Lieutenant in these matters.

Prof Layzell said: “I am honoured to take up the historic role.

“At Royal Holloway, our purpose is to advance knowledge to change our world and share that knowledge so we can make a sustained and meaningful contribution.

“Working with the Lieutenancy in Surrey, we will be able to share this passion with the community.”
