AN exploding fridge caused major damage to a home in Tilehurst this morning (December 27).

Two people were inside the home in Langley Hill Close when the fridge exploded causing extensive damage to the kitchen and downstairs of the home.

The couple, who were upstairs at the time, both escaped uninjured.

A fire crew from Caversham Road fire station attended the scene at around 7am.

It is understood the fridge was 10-years-old, prompting a warning from the Royal Berkshire Fire Service for householders to get experts to inspect any elderly fridge which is making a noise or giving off strange smells.

Meanwhile, yesterday a fire crew from Newbury Fire Station was called to a fish and chip shop in Thatcham High Street where there was a small fire on the burner.

By the time the crew had arrived at the scene at 8pm, the fire had been put out by the owner.

And further afield on Boxing Day, two crews from Newbury Fire Station were called to a car fire on the M4 westbound carriageway.

The motorway near the junction 15 turn off for Swindon was closed for nearly an hour to tackle the fire. No-one was injured The crews were delayed getting to the fire with cars and people parked on the hard shoulder.
