THE council’s culture chief vehemently denied rumours Bracknell’s libraries are at risk of closure as community campaigners aired their concerns at a full council meeting.

Defend our Community Services (DOCS) were out in force last Wednesday as they protested against Bracknell Forest Council’s emerging plans to shake-up the borough’s library service amid ongoing cuts.

Speaking to the News ahead of the meeting, member Terry Pearce, said: “The council have said they are closing no libraries but we feel that statement is very misleading to the public. They are talking about relocating some of the borough’s libraries, for example the town centre library. We have learnt there are three at risk but they haven’t told us where they are.

“They will probably be relocated into social hubs or community centres turning them into just book depositories.”

He added: “We understand cuts need to be made but we feel the money could be saved in a different way.

“The consultation the council is holding on this is costing £90,000 alone. The council’s executive members claim nearly £600,000 in allowances every year - we say cut that in its place.”

Mr Pearce and his wife Val, who spoke at the meeting, raised fears cuts could lead to paid librarians being replaced solely by volunteers.

However, addressing the group who filled the public seats of the council’s chamber at Easthampstead House, Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, corporate services and public protection, said: “It is well understood that we have to find an enormous chunk of money in savings and the library service is expected to play its part. But there are no plans to close any of our libraries. They are a focal point to the community for all residents, young and old.

“There is also no suggestion that any of our libraries will be exclusively staffed by volunteers although 30 per cent who responded to our first round of consultation said they would like to volunteer.”

The council’s second round of consultation on the future of the borough’s library service will close on Friday, December 16.
