Police and fire crews raced to the Royal Holloway University of London's Egham campus last night after a number of fires - believed to have been deliberately started - broke out in a campus dormitory.
Officers joined firefighters around 8pm - as residents were evacuated from the building. Police dog units as well as a police helicopter carried out a search for a suspect.
A 21-year-old man was detained nearby shortly afterwards and has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He is currently in custody. Enquiries, including searches to establish that there are no further fires remain ongoing.
No one is thought to have been injured as a result of the incident.
The incident has resulted in significant fire damage to at least one of the rooms within the building.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting incident reference P16274692.
