Crime fighting police officers in Surrey are among the country's fittest according to the latest figures published by the College of Policing.

Results published by the college reveal that the pass rate for fitness among officers in the county is almost 100%.

The figures show that of the 1,943 Surrey officers who took part in the test during from September to September 2014 to 2015, 99.5% successfully passed – which makes Surrey the joint third best performing force in the country.

In total 1,380 male officers and 563 female officers from across Surrey took part in the tests.

The Force introduced yearly mandatory fitness tests for its officers in 2012.

The test is a 15-metre shuttle run which is based on scientific research and matches the aerobic demands of officer safety training. The standard is the same as that used when recruiting officers.

Officers who do fail are then given a further four months to reach the required standard.

Surrey Police's Occupational Health Manager Liz Eades said: "We introduced officer fitness testing several years before it became mandatory and we remain at the forefront of promoting fitness and well-being and our very high pass rate shows that officers are feeling the benefits of this approach."

"We have more than 1,930 serving officers and all of them, including the Chief Constable, take the test."
