A POPULAR spot for dog walkers is set to be given a facelift by a parish council.

Tom Green's Field in Sunninghill is due to be spruced up by Sunninghill and Ascot Parish Council after nature has taken over the picturesque site.

The area was taken on by the parish council as a tranquil, open space for the benefit of wildlife and local people, and over the years trees have progressively invaded the field, changing its open nature to one of damp, shaded woodland.

Parish council chairman Allison Sharpe said: "The parish council maintains it for the benefit of the community.

"When the parish council took it over it was named as Tom Green's Field, which gives an indication the the nature of what it was like.

"If we leave nature to take its course then obviously nature will take over, so we have managed to get some expert advice and that we can adjust the balance and manage nature for the benefit of not only the people of Sunninghill but also for the wildlife."

The parish council aims to take on the work at the site off Coombe Lane over a five year period, with the aim to open up the space and reduce the amount of dense cover from some of the encroaching trees.

It is predicted to take several years due to the council having to manage its budgets to stagger the work in order to afford the costs.

Cllr Sharpe added: "It is not an overnight thing. There will be several years of work because we have got to manage the budgets around doing it.

"We do not have limitless funds and we have to carefully manage the budgets that we do have. If anyone wants to assist the council or sponsor us in anyway then it would be most welcome.

"The idea is that it will bring it back to a much more varied and open space and we hope that we might be able to invite local schools to take an interest in observing nature."
