Scammell: We've never been better
ASCOT United boss Stuart Scammell says the club has never been in better shape as he continues to plot his side’s assault on the Hellenic League Division One (East) title.
The Yellamen currently top the division, having lost just once all season, and events off the field have also seen the club progress as planning permission has been granted to help them improve their Racecourse home.
Last weekend Scammell saw his side bow out of the League Cup following a last-gasp 3-2 defeat at the hands of Premier Division outfit Shortwood United, but the Ascot boss was far from disappointed with the display.
He used the game to cast his eye over a number of the club’s reserve team players and insists what he saw shows that the club is improving at all levels.
“The key thing for me was what I got out of the game,” Scammell said. “I had nine of my first team out injured so I brought in six guys from the reserves who did fantastically well.
“I think the average age of the side was just over 20 which shows just how good the youngsters are that we have here.
“I had a couple of 16-year-olds involved and a 17-year-old. It gave me an opportunity to see how far we’ve come as a club and it was great to see.”
Some of the youngsters who featured were Jonty Gurr, Shane Venn, James Brazier, Joe Semadini, Ross Miller and Sam Humphries.
"Gurr was particularly impressive and picked up the man-of-the-match award.
Scammell added: “We train the same way at this club from the first team to the reserves and that’s very important.
“The guys that came in know the way we want to play and they didn’t let anyone down.
“They gave a performance that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Division One and that’s so important for me because now I won’t have any hesitation calling on them if they’re needed.”
